Mayor Eddie Francis called the announcement a "game changer" and that it will lead to further positive announcements for the local economy in the coming months.
"From a community perspective, this is a momentum-builder for us. It's a strong signal that investors are seeing positive signs," he said.
One-way fares start as low as $129 per person, plus applicable fees and taxes, and tickets were scheduled to go on sale at noon today. Go to www.westjet.com or call 1-888-WESTJET.
"We are very pleased to bring our world-class guest experience to the people of Windsor and southwestern Ontario," Hugh Dunleavy, WestJet executive vice-president, strategy and planning, said in a news release.
Francis said WestJet has committed to three years of seasonal service with daily flights from May 31 to Oct. 30.
WestJet gave up its thrice-weekly Windsor service in 2005 to pursue more lucrative routes. Francis said Windsor International Airport has been lobbying for the airline's return ever since taking over management of the city-owned operation.
Of an estimated 61,000 annual Windsor passenger flights to Western Canada destinations, almost two-thirds currently drive to Toronto's Pearson International while about a third currently fly with Air Canada from Windsor for connecting flights in Toronto, according to airport president and CEO Federica Nazzani.
"There's a lot of business going on between Windsor and the West," said Francis, who chairs the airport board of directors. He said those travelers will now be able to get to Calgary in about the same time it takes just to drive from Windsor to Toronto
